A giant Touch Screen Laptop stage…
One of the projects I worked on at ONE HAT ONE HAND was the ongoing design, production, install, and retrofitting of visual features for the Dreamforce conference. I designed and engineered the laptop stage pictured above, which featured nine seamless monitors with an infrared bezel that allowed their content to respond like a giant touch screen. This laptop (and it’s attendant phone, watch and tablet) was used by keynote speakers as a presentation stage.
This project involved extensive steel design, foam carving, acrylic work, and countless tricks of the trade to pull everything together in a seamless, fastener free presentation. This was made all the more challenging by the necessity of the set to pack down and be crated for travel. I designed and worked with the fabrication team to make the giant smartphones, and had roles on design and production fabrication for all items pictured here including their stage.
The ‘Internet of Things’ from 2015 was an especially interesting suite of objects to work on. By that time, we’d gotten the process of building giant phones, tablets, and smart watches down to a science; but a 7’ tall video game controller, and a perfect replica of a Phillips smart bulb at 6’ tall presented unique challenges. I did CAD modelling on both, as well as production fabrication on the game controller.
After the builds were complete, I traveled with various Salesforce displays as the sole representative from our company, to lead the union installation and strike crew at different shows across the US and London.
